On March 28, 2025, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar, causing widespread destruction across Myanmar and neighboring Thailand. The tremors led to significant loss of life, structural damage, and ongoing rescue operations in both countries.
Impact in Thailand
In Thailand, the earthquake resulted in at least 18 deaths, 78 individuals reported missing, and 68 injuries. The northern regions, including Bangkok, experienced the most severe effects. In Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, a 30-story building under construction collapsed, leading to eight confirmed fatalities and nine injuries; approximately 85 workers remained unaccounted for as of the following morning. Additionally, a construction crane collapsed in the Bang Pho area, causing one death and significant traffic disruptions. The tremors also led to the partial collapse of a skywalk connecting three high-rise buildings in the Thonglor area, resulting in debris falling and water from rooftop pools spilling onto the streets below. Public transportation faced temporary halts, and traffic congestion persisted into the night. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) received over 2,000 reports of structural cracks and planned to inspect 700 buildings for safety.
Rescue and Relief Efforts
Rescue operations have been intensive, particularly at the collapsed construction site in Bangkok, where signs of life were detected among the rubble. Efforts to locate and extract survivors continued around the clock, with emergency responders racing against time. International aid began arriving, with neighboring countries such as China and India sending search and rescue teams, medical personnel, and essential supplies. The United Nations allocated $5 million for relief efforts, emphasizing the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian assistance.
In response to the disaster, ASEAN foreign ministers convened a special emergency meeting via videoconference on March 30, 2025, to coordinate relief efforts and support for the affected populations in Myanmar and Thailand. The BMA deployed 130 engineers to inspect buildings for structural integrity, prioritizing public safety and preventing further incidents. ASEANnationthailand
Ongoing Challenges
The earthquake has compounded existing humanitarian challenges, particularly in Myanmar, which was already grappling with internal conflicts and displacement issues. The disaster’s impact on infrastructure, combined with the region’s political instability, poses significant obstacles to effective aid distribution and recovery efforts. Authorities continue to urge caution, as aftershocks have been reported, causing additional panic and complicating rescue operations. Al Jazeera
As the affected communities begin the arduous process of recovery, the focus remains on providing immediate relief to survivors, restoring essential services, and rebuilding the devastated areas. The international community’s support and regional cooperation are crucial in addressing the aftermath of this catastrophic event.
