American travelers should prepare for a new era of international and domestic travel as multiple new policies take effect in 2025. First, starting May 7, all domestic flyers must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card at TSA checkpoints. Non-compliant IDs will no longer be accepted for air travel.
Abroad, the United Kingdom has launched a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system. U.S. travelers must now apply online before visiting the UK and pay a small fee. Similarly, the European Union’s ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) will go live later this year, requiring American tourists to register in advance before entry into EU nations.
These changes aim to improve border security and streamline travel processes, but travelers are urged to plan ahead and stay informed to avoid disruptions. Experts recommend applying for documentation several weeks in advance and monitoring updates from the Department of State.
