On February 28, 2025, Zaha Hadid Architects unveiled their winning design for the “Napoli Porta Est” project, a transformative urban development set to redefine Naples’ eastern districts. This ambitious initiative, commissioned by the Regione Campania and FS Sistemi Urbani in collaboration with the Comune di Napoli, aims to revitalize approximately 200,000 square meters of former railway yards in Corso Lucci and the Porta Nolana area.

Central to the project is the creation of a state-of-the-art intermodal transportation hub. This facility will seamlessly integrate various modes of transport, including high-speed trains, metro lines, buses, and provide direct links to the Naples International Airport and the port. Such connectivity is poised to enhance mobility for both residents and visitors, positioning Naples as a pivotal transit nexus in the region.

A standout feature of the development is the new headquarters for the Regione Campania, dubbed “Il Faro” (The Lighthouse). Designed by the renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, the building’s futuristic architecture is expected to become a landmark, symbolizing Naples’ forward-looking aspirations. Surrounding “Il Faro” will be a sprawling green lane, stretching over a kilometer, offering residents and visitors a verdant space for recreation and relaxation.

The project’s scope also includes the undergrounding of existing EAV railway lines, facilitating the creation of a new public boulevard. This thoroughfare will not only improve urban aesthetics but also foster better integration between the redeveloped areas and the existing urban fabric, particularly the Centro Direzionale.

Naples’ Mayor and the President of Regione Campania have both lauded the project, emphasizing its potential to rejuvenate a significant portion of the city and enhance its architectural heritage. The “Napoli Porta Est” initiative is more than just an infrastructure project; it’s a bold statement of Naples’ commitment to sustainable urban development and modernization.

As the project progresses, it promises to bring substantial economic benefits, from job creation during the construction phase to increased tourism and business opportunities upon completion. Residents eagerly anticipate the positive changes that “Napoli Porta Est” will usher in, marking a new chapter in the city’s storied history.
