Jay Henderson’s Flow Shooting Academy: A Game-Changer for Underprivileged Kids

Share

Professional basketball player Jay Henderson is making an impact beyond the court. Through his nonprofit, Flow Shooting Academy, he’s opening doors for underprivileged kids to learn basketball, develop life skills, and be part of a team—without the financial burden that usually comes with training camps.

From Pro Athlete to Mentor

Flow Shooting AcademyGrowing up around basketball led Jay to a professional career, but he realized that not all kids get the same shot. Many youth basketball programs and summer camps come with a hefty price tag, making them inaccessible to families in lower-income areas. Even camps run by pro athletes often remain expensive, leaving many kids sidelined.

Jay saw a need for change. He asked himself, “Why should cost keep kids from playing?” That question led to the creation of Flow Shooting Academy in 2022—a summer camp that welcomes kids free of charge, giving them a chance to learn, grow, and enjoy the game without financial barriers.

Since launching in Orlando, the program has expanded to Miami, and in 2025, Boston will join the roster.

More Than Just Basketball

As a professional shooting guard, Jay understands the importance of shooting mechanics, a skill that many training camps overlook in favor of ball-handling drills. Flow Shooting Academy puts a strong emphasis on shooting, helping kids develop precision, confidence, and consistency.

However, the academy isn’t just about sports. Jay wants to prepare these kids for success in life, too. That’s why the camp brings in nutritionists, health experts, and tech professionals to expose kids to career paths and teach them important life skills beyond basketball.

Seeing the Impact Firsthand

For Jay, the most rewarding part of the academy is seeing the kids’ excitement—watching them improve, bond with each other, and simply enjoy the experience. The camp has become a melting pot of cultures and backgrounds, giving kids a sense of community while they chase their basketball dreams.

The academy’s rapid growth has caught the attention of major media outlets like TMZ Sports, further boosting its mission to reach even more kids.

A Team Effort: Sponsors Making a Difference

Flow Shooting Academy thrives thanks to incredible sponsors who believe in its mission:

  • Walmart provides essential back-to-school supplies, camp t-shirts, and backpacks for every participant.
  • Flow Water keeps the kids hydrated during training.
  • Rock ‘Em Socks, a brand that collaborates with Marvel, the NFL, the NBA, and Disney, donates high-quality socks to the players.
  • FX Design Group handles marketing materials like banners, flyers, and step & repeats to promote the academy’s events.

With this strong support, the academy continues to grow each year, giving more kids the opportunity to experience the game in a way they might never have before.
